The Nikkei restaurant in Lima, Peru has topped the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. See the full list.
Maido has been named the best restaurant in the world at the unveiling of The World’s 50 Restaurants list sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna in Turin, Italy.
The restaurant, located in Lima, Peru and headed up by chef Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura, is a proponent of Nikkei cuisine, the fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors and recently celebrated its 15th birthday. It’s previously topped the Latin America’s 50 Restaurants list four times.
An ecstatic Tsumura and team took to the stage in Turin to riotous applause and once he had composed himself, telling the still standing audience that it was “difficult to speak”, Tsumura spoke about the “dream of making people happy, of hospitality” that had driven him since opening Maido.
Urging the industry to think more about human as well as environmental sustainability, he added, poignantly, that the gastronomic industry “is an example of how we can get together” at a time when the world is increasingly divided.
Maido will now join all the previous winners, including 2024's number one, Disfrutar, in the Best of the Best – a hall of fame of restaurants no longer eligible for the list.
Special Awards
A series of special awards were announced on the night, including World’s Best Pastry Chef for Maxime Frédéric of Cheval Blanc in Paris, World’s Best Sommelier, which was awarded to Mohamed Benabdallah of Asador Etxebarri in the Basque Country (number two on the list), and the Chef’s Choice Award, which went to Albert Adrià, whose Enigma restaurant in Barcelona sits at number 34.
The Icon Award was given to Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore of Osteria Francescana – a popular choice on a successful night for Italy, which was hosting the event for the first time and had six restaurants in the top 50, including two in the top 20.
Further awards had been announced ahead of the event, including the One to Watch award for Egypt’s Khufu’s, which offers astounding views of the pyramids at Giza, the World’s Best Female Chef, awarded to Pichaya ‘Pam’ Soontornyanakijof Bangkok’s Potong (this year’s Highest New Entry), and the Art of Hospitality Award, which went to chef Vicky Cheng’s Wing, in Hong Kong.
